The Sounds of Luosto festival will be organized in the Lappish landscape on Luosto, Pyhä, and in Sodankylä. Concerts will be held in places like the natural amphitheater of Ukko-Luosto and the banks of the river Kitinen, as well as Sodankylä’s historic old church.
The theme of 2024 is Echoes of History. On offer is a highly varied program of orchestra, chamber, and performance of familiar classics, connections with folk music, contemporary music, and forgotten masterpieces, as well as the traditional saloon concert!
Transportation to concert venues will be provided by a bus that departs from Lapland Hotels Luostotunturi. Tickets for this bus can be purchased from the Festival Office, located inside the hotel.
In addition to individual tickets, patrons will have the possibility to buy different types of ticket packets. All tickets are sold on Ticketmaster. During the festival tickets can be bought also from Festival Office and at the door.
Summit series consists of the opening concert on Luosto and the concert on Pyhätunturi on 1.8, the main concert at Ukko-Luosto and evening concert on Luosto on 3.8 (a total of 4 concerts).
Sodankylä day (2.8) consists of the Sodankylä Old Church concert, Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory concert, and Porttikoski concert (a total of 3 concerts)
Luosto day (3.8) consists of the main concert at Ukko-Luosto and the evening concert on Luosto (a total of 2 concerts).

FOLK JOY

In folk music we find a reflection of a people: their joy, pride, and sorrows. It is a living archive of their customs and their history. This program is built of four classical works, which attempt to borrow from different folk music and introduce it to the classical tradition. Classic of all-classics, Dvořák’s Ukrainian-influenced Dumky trio ends the program, but before that, Grieg and Busoni interpret Norwegian and Finnish folk songs, and we hear the Finnish premiere of Price’s Five Folk Songs in Counterpoint.

The old church of Sodankylä has stood next to the river Kitinen for well over 300 years, and it has watched many generations pass by its doors. Similar landmarks can be found everywhere you look: quiet guardians, watching time go by. Bach’s Goldberg variations, one of the most famous works from one of history’s most famous composers, has served a similar role, but only now, 283 years after its publication, will it be heard for the first time in a church just decades its elder.

THE GARDEN OF JOY AND SORROW

The Soviet Union was never the biggest fan of Sofia Gubaidulina. A modernist female composer, inspired by western classical music and strongly devout, her situation only got worse in the year 1979, when the Union of Soviet Composers blacklisted her. Despite this, or perhaps in spite of it, in 1980 she would composer her famous harp trio, “The Garden of Joy and Sorrow”. In this concert we will build this dream garden in the middle of the beautiful environs of Porttikoski, as a sign of respect to Gubaidulina and all other voices that history tried to silence.

Paris has played home to many a composer over the centuries, and as time has passed, that history has become as much of a draw to the next generation as the city in all its beauty. This performance begins with two works from Finnish women who found inspiration in Paris, before moving slightly closer to home, with hostess Anu Magga performing joik and telling stories of the reindeer farm and surrounding region while serving local specialties.

A common refrain throughout history has been the unbelievable claim that women cannot compose. The explanations have varied throughout the years, but woman after woman has fought to prove them wrong. Although works by women will be played throughout our festival, this program contains three pieces written by women who disappeared into history after they wed. Clara Schumann and Doreen Carwithen both ended their compositional careers after they married men who were composers themselves, and although Fanny Mendelssohn’s husband supported her “hobby”, her works were never published by request of her more famous older brother.
