Italian-Swiss flutist Livia Schweizer is a flutist based in Helsinki.
She started to study flute at the Conservatory Mascagni of Livorno in Mauro Rossi’s class. Attracted by the Nordic cultures and by the Finnish musical scene, in 2012 Livia took part in the Erasmus program at the OAMK in Oulu, and in 2014 she moved to Helsinki to study at the Sibelius Academy in Mikael Helasvuo’s flute class.
Since moving to Helsinki Schweizer has been a very active freelancer, proving upon different occasions to be a very versatile musician; she worked with Nyky-ensemble, Korvat Auki, UMUU-ensemble, Eloa ry, Tampering, Avanti!, performing in festivals such as the Flow Festival, Helsingin Juhlaviikot, Tulkinnanvaraista and Musica Nova. At the moment she is a member of the Helsinki based Septad-ensemble, an ensemble focused on the concept of real time composed music; and of the Earth Ears Ensemble, an ensemble focused on contemporary music from lesser heard voices.
She has been an artist-in-residence at the Old Mine Residency in Outokumpu and at Villa Karo in Grand-Popo (Benin), and in the last few years she has developed a very strong interest towards improvisation and how it can be used to connect with space and with artists from different backgrounds and cultures.
Schweizer is also an active orchestral player. In the last two years she worked with Jyväskylä Sinfonia, Pori Sinfonietta, Turku Philharmonic Orchestra and Lahti Symphony Orchestra.
In Spring 2019 she studied as an exchange student at USC in Los Angeles iin Jim Walker’s flute class, and in Finland her teachers have been Mikael Helasvuo, Hanna Kinnunen, and Jari Puhakka for the baroque flute.
Schweizer has a master in flute and music pedagogy from the University of the Arts, Sibelius Academy and she teaches flute for the International School of Music, Finland.
